Shubayqa 1

Renewed excavations at the Natufian site of Shubayqa 1 started in 2012 following initial investigations by Alison Betts in 1996. Continuing work has revealed two phases of structures comprising of flat basalt slabs forming paved floors, stone walls with hearths incorporated into the architecture. Rich botanical, chipped stone and faunal samples were recovered from these hearths.

Beneath the upper structure a number of newborn children were buried under the paved floor slabs. Above these structures midden deposits accumulated across the area indicating that occupation continued in the vicinity of these structures after their abandonment.
